Idea

Generating the Solution

Generating the idea was easy: knowing what happened from the moment the coffee seedling was planted, through harvesting, and into the wet-milling process. Then comes the roasting stage to convert the green bean into the coffee we drink daily, in any of its presentations.

Design

A Disruptive Application

When engineering how to structure agricultural entities — differentiating them by country, production regions and especially by client, as in an agricultural CRM — I was led to research critical control point analysis and Food Safety. At that point, I knew nothing about what happened in a crop field to develop the algorithms that control and feed these processes.

Research

Coffee Producer Certification

To gain agricultural knowledge of what happens from planting the seed to the bean leaving the mill, I took an organic coffee producer certification course through IICA and Indocafé. I also researched coffee varieties, traceability plans, support plans ensuring good agricultural practices, and SG1 traceability standards.

Action

Intelligent Algorithms

Based on the research, I designed algorithms to handle any type of crop — not just coffee — with intelligent management of control points and automatic generation of traceability plans and support plans for each producer.

Control

Smart Devices

We formed an alliance with smart device manufacturers in Guatemala. I developed the necessary services to link each deployed device to each control point within the production process. The services store received data, process it and generate alerts in case of incidents.
